How to get the app

The Teena - Guide to Periods app helps explains period health in simple straightforward language for teens and preteens. The app has a useful symptom diary where you can record your amount of bleeding, your emotions and other health features such as acne and period poops.

Although the app is registered as a period tracker, you need the Teena Device (which costs US$109) paired with the app to predict your next period. The Teena device measures your body temperature when you place the sensor under your tongue. The technology is based on period prediction using basal body temperature.

The app has a magazine section that has articles and videos which provide information about period health.

PROS CONS

✔ Explains the menstrual cycle in simple language and with very good attractive graphics.

✔ Explains exercises you can do during different times of your cycle which may help with cramps or bloating or general well-being.

✔ It has a diary section and you can keep track of your past period history in the free version. With the paid device you can easily predict your next period.

Privacy and there are no forums.

✔ It highlights what's normal and when to seek help eg, when to expect your periods, if it's heavy, if you have unbearable cramps.

✔ Information bites that address some myths associated with period health, such as breast buds do not mean breast cancer or vaginal discharge which suggests infection.

Test group for 6 months only for the app so far. Doesn't say how many users were included to create a learning curve for the algorithms to help predict your period.

Teena device paired with the app tracks your basal body temperature and tracks when you ovulate so then can predict your next period. Useful for those with irregular periods. You have to pay for this device though so this benefit isn't available to everyone.

The paired device is expensive.

Suggests yearly OBGYN (Obstetrician and Gynaecologist) visits which is not the case in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Comments: This is a good app which helps explains period health in simple straightforward language for teens and preteens.
It's really good at helping teens/preteens and their parents learn about body changes especially in their newsletter or videos. There's no forum so it provides only relevant information. It's registered as a period tracker, but it really needs the Teena Device (which costs US$109) paired with the app to predict your next period. It has good safety netting and a section on FAQs and advice on when to seek help.

Safety concerns: The free version is not a fully functional period tracker app especially at a young age when your periods are not regular. This could raise unnecessary worry. The Teena device, which is not free, helps to predict the periods using body temperature. There are other apps which are free which will help alleviate this problem.
New Zealand relevance: Yes
Concerns: It has straightforward simple language, but to get the most benefit from the app you need the Teena device which costs about US$109. This is expensive for the Aotearoa New Zealand market and the preteen and teen audience. The other concern is that it works well for girls who have regular periods, but given that in the first 4 years or so periods are irregular, it may cause alarm in young girls. The basal body temperature enables accurate prediction of your period but again this needs the pricey device.
